Aromaterapi tabirini ilk kez 1937’de Fransız kimyacı René-Maurice Gattefossé yazdığı kitapta kullanmıştır. Fransız kimyager daha öncesinde de lavanta bitkisinin yanıkları iyileştirmedeki potansiyelini keşfetmiştir.
Aromaterapinin uygulamalarının vücuda etkisi araştırmalara göre, uçucu yağlar solunduğu veya deriye sürüldüğü zaman otonom sinir sistemi ve hipotalamus üzerinde aktiviteye sebep olur. Hipotalamus, beynin stresle başa çıkma, rahatlama, hormon salgılayarak vücut fonksiyonlarını düzenleme gibi önemli işlevleriyle ilişkilidir.
